Assuming you are already comfortable with the neutral and ready positions, one of the skills I find myself using almost every day on the trail is the front wheel lift. They can be used to get your front wheel up on to another level (e.g. picking up your wheel to climb a ledge or a curb). Even a mini front wheel lift can be helpful to take some of the weight off of your wheel so it "floats" over a root or a rock instead of just running into it. Front wheel lifts are also one of the building blocks for more advanced skills such as manuals, wheelies, bunny hops, and more. Check out this video by Roxy to start exploring your front wheel lifts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvBrz99EaAc.
You can guarantee that if your bike breaks down on the trail, it has usually started raining, you've forgotten an essential tool and the mosquitoes are out for blood. Be smart like Colin and remember to do your ABC Bike Check before every ride.
